CDEnviro has commissioned its first recycling plant in Europe to process road sweepings and gully emptyings. The plant is based at C&D Chapuis Sarl, Canton Jura, North West Switzerland. C&D Chapuis Sarl offer a specialist range of tunnel and drainage cleaning equipment and hold regional contracts to clean and collect material from a number of private and publicly owned companies.

CDEnviro has commissioned its first recycling plant in Europe to process road sweepings and gully waste. The plant is based at C&D Chapuis Sarl, Canton Jura, North West Switzerland. C&D Chapuis Sarl offer a specialist range of tunnel and drainage cleaning equipment and hold regional contracts to clean and collect material from a number of private and publicly owned companies.

These contracts cover the entire Canton of Jura. The Canton of Jura is one of the smaller Cantons in Switzerland, with an area of approximately 850 sq/km, and is located close to the borders of France and Germany. Legislation in Switzerland stipulates that waste cannot be exported across the borders and must be disposed of or treated in Switzerland; this can be a costly route as disposal costs vary and can be as high as €140/ton.

CDEnviro provide customised solutions for recycling gully emptyings and road sweepings depending on the individual requirements of the project, the type of material and the tonnage. Gully waste and road sweepings have proven to be a valuable resource in the UK and Europe, with many materials being recovered for re-use. Recovering these materials not only offers a sustainable solution for this waste, but also offers great economical savings.

Prior to the introduction of the CDEnviro recycling technology, C&D Chapuis Sarl used a combination of specially adapted collection vehicles and drainage tanks to dewater the material before sending 100% of the solids to landfill. As the material has a high inert content it is not suitable for incineration. This introduction of the CDEnviro technology makes their process uniquely competitive in Switzerland.
The CDEnviro solution designed for C&D Chapuis Sarl processes road sweepings and gully waste as well as residues from Switzerland’s extensive network of tunnels. C&D Chapuis Sarl also plan to sweep the roads of local army bases which contain spent munitions from which they can recover valuable non-ferrous metal for resale.

The recycling system accepts waste water laden with 10,000 Tons of solid material each year and recovers ferrous material, washed sand, washed lightweight/organic material, washed stone and dewatered silt. The plant now diverts 80% of this material from landfill. The recovered sand and aggregate are sold directly to the market and C&D Chapuis Sarl are considering using dewatered organics for incineration.

CDEnviro’s water treatment system ensures incoming waste is thoroughly washed with recycled water. As part of the water treatment process the auto sampling system systematically tests and measures the dose rate of chemicals being added to assist with the water treatment process. This testing ensures that consistent water quality is achieved and that chemicals are not added unnecessarily.
Commenting on the introduction of the CDEnviro recycling system, David Chapuis, Owner, C&D Chapuis Sarl said, “This technology is the first of its kind in Switzerland. It has transformed the way we process waste and significantly reduced our landfill tax bill”

The CDEnviro team worked closely with C&D Chapuis Sarl throughout the whole process, from design and manufacturing through to installation and commissioning to ensure the system would process the material to the agreed specification

“It was important for us to get to know the CDEnviro team, not just the process”, said David Chapuis, “there was a lot of trust built up over the design and installation of the project, and we’re very happy with all of the support we’ve been given along the way. It’s good to know the support is there throughout the project and beyond”.

CDEnviro provided a customised design to allow the recycling system to be constructed within an existing building on the C& D Chapuis Sarl site whilst ensuring the equipment and processed materials could be easily accessed.
